Wesleyan College mourns the passing of Eleanor Adams Lane, a beloved member of the Wesleyan family.

A member of the Class of 1958, Eleanor was outstanding among a singular group of outstanding women. Her life was marked by service to her alma mater, her community, and her church. Follow is a link to her obituary.

The service for Eleanor, A Celebration of Life, will be held at Wesleyan College’s Pierce Chapel on Friday, August 5, 2022 at 2PM, officiated by Vivia Fowler. Family and friends are welcome. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Wesleyan College, Vineville United Methodist Church, or the charity of the donor’s choice will be welcome. The service may be viewed livestream.

In addition to a lifetime of civic service, Eleanor served Wesleyan College in many ways, including as a class liaison, chair of the Wesleyan Sesquicentennial Committee, member of the board of trustees for eleven years, and an ardent friend of the arboretum. She was the guiding force – the heart, soul, and spirit – for Wesleyan’s Lane Center for Service and Leadership, providing not only significant financial support but also inspiring personal leadership in the College’s efforts to teach every Wesleyan student about the practices and joys of serving others. Hundreds of Lane Center Servant Leaders learned about caring for others through Aunt Maggie’s Kitchen Table and scores of other Lane Center projects, and hundreds of Macon children served by Aunt Maggie’s felt loved and nurtured by our students and by Eleanor herself. Eleanor was recognized for her contributions to Wesleyan in 1980 with the Alumnae Award for Distinguished Achievement; in 2008 with the Valeria McCullough Murphey Award; and in 2016 as the first recipient of the Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award by Wesleyan.
