Paintings by Atlanta-area artist Judith Surowiec are on exhibit in the Castelli Gallery in the John S. Burd Center for the Performing Arts on Brenau University’s historic Gainesville campus through April 20.
Judith Surowiec: Moments in Time features paintings of vibrant landscapes, buildings with character, the ins and outs of daily life, and other things that Surowiec felt a connection to.
An opening reception is scheduled from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on March 9, and Surowiec will deliver an artist’s talk at 6 p.m.
“Surowiec’s paintings are a visual diary,” Brenau Gallery Director Gena Brodie Robbins said. “They are a reflection of her life and the world around her. I am excited for the Brenau community to experience this exhibition and see the world through her eyes.”
Capturing the world in paint
Surowiec said she begins her paintings in the elements and works to capture the essence and translate it to canvas.
“Yes, sometimes I work out of the confines of the stretcher frame, and I find that the odd shape of the canvas inspires me to think ‘out of the box’ and avoid the ‘call of reality,’” she said.
Painting is more to Surowiec than just acrylic on canvas. She also shares her enthusiasm for the arts through education by painting demos in schools, talking about her artistic journey, teaching the medium and sharing feedback with her fellow artists. Surowiec also creates using colored pencils.
Surowiec graduated from State University of New York in Buffalo, New York, with a bachelor’s degree in art education. She also spent 15 years studying with the late Joseph Perrin, professor emeritus and founder of Georgia State University School of Art and Design. She is a founder of the Valley Artist Association in New York and the Dunwoody Arts and Crafts Guild in Dunwoody, Georgia. She has a studio in the Tannery Row Artist Colony in Buford, Georgia. Her work can be found in several books on colored pencils and acrylic painting.
Judith Surowiec: Moments in Time will close on April 20. More information can be found on the Brenau Galleries website.
