Georgia's first-ever citizenship voter poll audit showed that over 1,600 noncitizens tried to register to vote in Georgia, but authorities said none of those identified were able to cast their ballots.

Brad Raffensperger, Georgia Secretary of State, highlighted the results of the audit in a release, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. The review found 1,634 people who had attempted to register to vote in the state but could not be verified by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services' Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements program.

"Ensuring that only citizens are voting in Georgia's elections is key to upholding the integrity of the vote in Georgia," Raffensperger said in the release. "As liberal states and cities around the country are changing their laws to allow noncitizen voting, I will continue to take steps to ensure Georgia's elections are executed with integrity. Leading the state's first citizenship audit of the voter rolls is an important part of that effort."

Due to the state's current procedures, those identified in the citizenship check were flagged as "pending citizenship" and were barred from voting in any Georgia election, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. More than 2,200 applications for voter registration are currently flagged as such.

Raffensperger had previously come out in favor of legislation that would amend the state constitution to prevent noncitizens from voting, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. The proposal, however, did not reach the two-thirds majority required by the Georgia Senate for a constitutional amendment. Democratic members of the Senate voted against the measure while Republican members voted for the amendment.
