Facing the possibility of a lengthy suspension after being captured on video grabbing a student, Tri-Cities High School Athletic Director Kenneth Miller is drawing the support of a community that sees his actions as heroic.
Supporters convened at a church near the school to show support for Miller as he faces a possible 20-day suspension, FOX 5 Atlanta reported. Miller found two guns on campus in August 2021.
“From the start of this I’ve always said that God is in control,” Miller told FOX 5. “So, every day my strength comes from my God."
The incident occurred as Miller was asked to investigate reports that some students had brought guns on campus, according to the report. Eyewitness reports and body cam footage showed one girl acted with aggression toward Miller, with things turning physical after she is seen smacking his hand. At that point, Miller grabbed the girl, fearing for his own safety.
A loaded gun was later found in the bag of the female student Miller had the encounter with, FOX 5 reported. A second gun was found on campus later that day.
"I go to school each day just to build the relationship and cultivate it with the kids. It means a lot to help cultivate a safe learning environment," Miller said.
While Miller has been on paid administrative leave and off-campus since September 2021, FOX 5 reports many in the community are fighting for him. The next oral argument for challenging the suspension will take place March 23 at the Fulton County School District office.
