Georgia Tech's Keshav Chopra earned two singles victories against ranked opponents at the MLK Invitational, earning him the title of ACC men's tennis player of the week.
Chopra won singles matches against Hugo Hashimoto of Columbia University, ranked 87, and Kweisi Kenyatte of the University of Illinois, ranked 116, Georgia Tech reported in a release. The 6-foot-1inch, 137-pound redshirt sophomore also defeated Ben Gollin of Columbia, maintaining his winning streak for the weekend. Chopra was the only player participating in the tournament to defeat two ranked opponents.
Chopra enjoyed similar success in doubles matches, alongside his partner Pablo Schelcher, Georgia Tech reported. The Georgia Tech duo won three games, defeating Alex Finkelstein and Max Westphal of Columbia University, Kenyatte and Gabrielius Guzauskas of the University of Illinois, and Gollin and Hashimoto of Columbia University. Chopra and Schelcher formed the only undefeated doubles team at the tournament that weekend.
Chopra is off to an impressive start in 2022 after achieving a 14-10 overall singles record last season, Georgia Tech reported. That includes a 6-5 record against ACC competition. He was 9-6 in doubles competitions, including a 7-2 mark when he paired with Andres Martin.
Before attending Georgia Tech, Chopra was ranked No.1 nationally in the United States Tennis Association's boys 16 singles rankings, Georgia Tech reported. In high school, the Marietta, Ga., native was ranked top 5 in the nation and No.1 in Georgia, according to the Tennis Recruiting Network.
