Today (Saturday, October 22), the Covenant women's soccer team traveled to Jackson, Mississippi to face the first-seeded Belhaven Blazers. The defeat allowed Covenant to make a jump from sixth seed to finishing fourth in the conference.
Suffering a loss knocked the Blazers down from first to third seed heading into CCS tournament play.
Though Belhaven out-shot the Scots, Defensive Player of the Week, Lucy Sandhoff, tallied eight saves on the night to pave the way for a 1-0 shut-out. The Blazers put up 14 shots, with eight on goal, compared to the 6 attempts from Covenant. However, the Scots had a very high percentage of goals on target, almost 67%. This proved to be effective, as Leah Marr, taking the last shot of the game, put a shot on goal that the Blazers could not defend.
The Scots' resilience throughout the night showed, as they were able to get on the board with less than three minutes left of the game. After Marr's goal in the 87th minute, the Blazers could not muster up another scoring attempt. The Scots were able to walk away victorious, a fantastic end to CCS regular season.
Covenant Women's Soccer was rescheduled to face Emory on Monday, October 24. However, this match has been cancelled. The next game for the Lady Scots will be post season against the LaGrange Panthers. The winner will then advance onto the conference semi-finals.
