The City of Alpharetta has announced that the construction of Wacky World Playground at Wills Park is set to commence in 2025. This decision follows a strategic move by the city to optimize taxpayer funds by consolidating all planned improvements for Wills Park into a single contract. The decision was finalized by the Alpharetta City Council on June 24.
Initially, a $3.8 million bid was placed for the playground, an adjacent restroom facility, and other amenities. However, this will now be replaced with a new procurement package that includes all upgrades for Wills Park. Despite these changes, the design for Wacky World Playground remains unchanged, reflecting input from local children and students who participated in input sessions.
Morgan Rodgers, Director of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Services stated, “We’re still all in on bringing Wacky World Next Generation to life.” He added that although they hoped to start sooner, the revised timeline would ensure smoother project execution and cost savings.
A citizen's committee continues its efforts to raise $750,000 for additional playground features. So far, $518,254.80 has been raised through community contributions. The playground construction is part of projects funded by a $29.5 million Parks Bond approved by voters in November 2021.
Dana Davis from the Wacky World Committee expressed gratitude towards community support: “Every dollar raised helps make Wacky World even more exciting for our families.” She noted that the extended fundraising period allows more time to achieve their goals.
Wacky World will remain open during this period with regular safety inspections ensuring visitor safety.
