A situation with a man firing guns across the street from Abbotts Hill Elementary School ended Aug. 10 after the gunman took his own life.
WSBTV News reported that police were called to investigate shots fired in a neighborhood along Abbotts Bridge Road near Abbotts Hill Elementary. After officers arrived, they heard more shots being fired. When police tracked the shots to a private home across the street from the school, a suspect retreated into the home and refused to come out.
The North Metro SWAT set up a command post on the school campus to oversee the situation, according to FOX 5 News. Students were released on a normal schedule just before 4 p.m. and students who lived in the neighborhood remained on campus until the situation could be resolved.
The SWAT team eventually infiltrated the suspect's home and found him dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
No students were harmed in the situation and local residents were able to return to their homes just after 6 p.m.
“We are truly thankful no citizens or any of our officers were hurt during this situation,” Chief Mark Mitchell wrote in an Aug. 10 Twitter post. “I want to thank the administration of Abbotts Hill, FC School Police, SSPD, DPD and BPD for all of their assistance today to help bring this incident to a safe resolution.”
