Atlanta-area nonprofit Kate's Club has named Hawks forward-center Onyeka Okongwu as its 2022 Mourning Glory Gala Honoree. The organization works to empower children and teens who are facing life after the death of a parent, sibling or caregiver.

The NBA highlighted the May 14 gala in a recent release, noting that the black-tie optional event will be held at the Loews Atlanta Hotel and will feature a seated dinner, an open bar, silent and live auctions, and a live band. More than 300 guests are expected to attend the annual fundraiser.

The Hawks' forward-center has focused much of his community work on serving young people and honoring nurses; a tribute he makes to his mother, Kate, who has been a nurse for many years.

"Onyeka has demonstrated a desire and commitment to impacting his community," the release said.

Back in 2014, Onyeka lost his older brother in a skateboarding accident, and since the tragedy he has worked to place a greater emphasis on valuing life as a tribute to his brother, the release said. Following his own experience with grief, Onyeka said he feels “uniquely equipped” to support Kate’s Club.

In his two seasons with the Hawks, Okongwu, a graduate of the University of Southern California, has appeared in 98 games with 10 starts. He averages 6.3 points per game on .672 shooting from the floor and 4.6 rebounds.
