DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond has introduced a plan in his county budget proposal that would give raises and benefits to law enforcement and emergency personnel.

The $14.1 million budget proposal aims to recruit, retain and train public safety personnel, including law enforcement and firefighters, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. If it is approved, approximately 2,500 public safety personnel will be receiving a raise in the spring.

"I am proud of this investment. It is evidence of the fact that we support the men and women in uniform," Thurmond told Fox 5 Atlanta.

The budget proposed to the County Commission includes a 6.25% increase in compensation for public safety personnel, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. It also boasts a $3,000 retention bonus, $5,000 hiring incentive for Peace Officer Standards and Training-certified officers, higher starting pay, and bigger 401(a) contribution.

"It's a step in the right direction but it's not the last step," Thurmond said. "We are going to continue to make investments. We are going to continue to support all of our public safety personnel as we recognize how important they are to the safety and security of this county."

Thurmond said salary increases and bonuses will go to police as well as any other sworn officers, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. He expects the County Commission to approve the budget proposal.
