Gov. Brian Kemp has been making a major push toward reelection and has amassed approximately $13 million in his primary campaign account, compared with only $1.1 million for his Republican gubernatorial competitor, former Sen. David Perdue.
Perdue feels that his backing by former President Donald Trump will be noticeable at the polls despite only raising a little more than $1 million since announcing he would be running in December, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. Republican Vernon Jones recently dropped out of the race and is supporting Perdue.
"As the only Trump-endorsed candidate in this race, David Perdue has the message, the momentum, and the grassroots network to win in May and defeat Stacey Abrams in November," Perdue spokesperson Jenni Sweat told Fox 5 Atlanta. "While Brian Kemp collects checks from lobbyists and special interest groups, David Perdue is traveling around the state and connecting with thousands of everyday Georgians."
A judge ordered Kemp through a preliminary injunction on Feb. 7 to stop collecting funds via his committee, Georgians First, as incumbents are not allowed to raise money from personal campaign accounts during the meeting of the General Assembly, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. The committee managed to raise $2.3 million and had already spent $1.7 million prior to the injunction.
Kemp has raised $12.7 million, which includes $7.4 million in a seven-month period as of Jan. 31, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. Democrat challenger Stacey Abrams has raised $9.25 million since just before Perdue threw his hat in the ring. Kemp spokesperson Cody Hall said Perdue's campaign is driven by ego and referred to his fundraising capabilities as an embarrassment.
"It is abundantly clear Gov. Kemp is the only Republican with the grassroots support, conservative record and resources to beat Stacy Abrams this November," Hall said.
The primary election takes place on May 24.
