Fulton County closes schools and administrative offices for Braves' World Series victory parade

The Atlanta Braves are the World Series champions for the first time since 1995 after knocking off the Houston Astros in six games, and schools and administrative offices around the area are taking notice and closing on Friday for the celebration and parade.

According to CBS46, Fulton Country School District, Marietta City Schools, Atlanta Public School, Clayton County Public Schools, DeKalb County School District and Gwinnett County Schools will be closed for the day to celebrate the Braves’ victory.

The Braves announced that the parade will start at noon at the corner of Marietta Street NW and Peachtree Street, and then travel north from Peachtree to 10th Street. It will end at Circle 75 Parkway. The Braves are encouraging people to watch from the parade route and celebrate the first Atlanta title in 26 years.

“Fulton County Schools joins the metro Atlanta region and fans everywhere in celebrating the World Champion Atlanta Braves,” Fulton County Schools tweeted. “All schools and administrative offices, will be closed this Friday, November 5th. Go @Braves!”

Atlanta Public Schools tweeted that the schools would be closed due to “logistical challenges associated with anticipated traffic, road closures and crowds” in the area.

Gwinnett County School Officials, according to WSBTV.com, felt it was an exciting time for the children who were not around the last time Atlanta won the World Series.

A release by Fulton County said that it anticipated the school would see a large number of staff and student absences, which would be a disruption, so the school acted and decided to close the school, similar to instances of inclement weather. There will be no makeup day or remote learning for students or staff.

While many are rejoicing the Atlanta victory and the decision to close, some replied negatively to the Fulton County Tweet. One Tweet questioned why the closure occurred when it did not on election day earlier this week. Another questioned encouraging its community to go to a mass gathering during a pandemic.

CBS46 reported that there will also be a celebration at Truist Park following the parade that will include performances by Big Boi and Ludacris. Free tickets can be found at www.braves.com/parade.
