Georgia’s largest county has begun administering Pfizer vaccine booster shots.
The Fulton County Board of Health recently announced in a press release that COVID-19 vaccination sites the agency operates with Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency and other Fulton County partners would start giving out booster shots.
The Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine is the only one that has been authorized as a booster dose, the release said.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines say the following are eligible for a booster shot six months after receiving their first Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine series: people 65 years and older and residents in long-term care settings (recommended); people aged 50-64 years with underlying medical conditions (recommended); people ages 18-49 years with underlying medical conditions (may receive based on their individual benefits and risks); people ages 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting (may receive).
The county apportioned 25% of spots for unvaccinated individuals.
WSB-TV News reported that officials expected to administer hundreds of shots a day.
Dr. Davon Thomas told the station he received his booster shot to protect himself amid an increase of infections.
“We are at increased exposure risk, so to protect myself I’m getting a booster to make sure my antibodies are up to date,” Thomas said.
