The annual Rivers Alive Volunteer Watershed Cleanup event in Alpharetta is scheduled for Saturday, October 5, 2024, from 8:30 am to noon. Volunteers are invited to sign in at Rock Mill Park, located at 3100 Kimball Bridge Road, starting at 8:30 am. Following a brief gathering with announcements at 8:45 am, participants will be dispatched to various project sites and return by 11:30 am with collected litter and debris for weighing and tallying.
Volunteers will engage in activities such as removing litter from greenways, roadways, and streams; stenciling storm drains; and other related projects. The event aims to involve families, scout troops, service groups, and individuals in efforts to protect local waterways. Pre-registration is encouraged by emailing tporter@alpharetta.ga.us or calling (678) 297-6213.
Rivers Alive's mission is to raise awareness about the preservation of Georgia's water resources. Harold Harbert, Watershed Outreach Manager with the Environmental Protection Division, noted that last year’s event saw 9,800 volunteers remove 308,000 pounds of trash from waterways. Items collected included tires, plastic bottles, shopping carts, and refrigerators.
The event is supported by statewide sponsors such as International Paper, Georgia Power, Burns & McDonnell Foundation, Perdue Farms, Southwire Company, Wild Heaven Beer, and the American Water Works Association (Georgia Section). Numerous local organizations also sponsor individual cleanups across the state.
The City of Alpharetta and the Alpharetta Natural Resource Commission are organizing this year's cleanup. For more information on Georgia Rivers Alive events visit https://riversalive.georgia.gov
