ATLANTA – House Speaker Pro-Tempore Jan Jones (R-Milton) announces that Governor Brian Kemp recently signed House Bill 1010 into law. This legislation, sponsored by Pro Tem Jones, increases the number of hours of annual paid parental leave for state employees and teachers and school personnel from three to six weeks.
“This significant legislation demonstrates our commitment to supporting working families across Georgia and promoting work-life balance to ensure that parents have the support they need during important family milestones,” said Pro Tem Jones. “Paid parental leave, available for the birth of a child or the foster and adoption placement of a child, is a crucial benefit that empowers employees to prioritize their family responsibilities without compromising their financial security. I am thrilled to see HB 1010 become law and extend my gratitude to Speaker of the House Jon Burns and my House colleagues for their support in advancing this measure to the governor’s desk.”
HB 1010 doubles the annual paid parental leave for state employees and employees of local education agencies from three to six weeks. This leave can be utilized for the birth of a child or the foster and adoption placement of a child. The bill also mandates employers to inform eligible employees of these benefits upon hiring and on an annual basis thereafter.
