A household item that you may not think to recycle is paint. The Roswell Recycling Center allows Roswell Residents to recycle their paint* for a small fee! According to How to Recycle Paint – Recycle Nation it is common in American households for used paint cans to sit in basements, garages, and sheds with a likelihood of never being reused. The Environmental Protection Agency recently stated that approximately 70 million gallons of paint are left over annually across the U.S. Although hoarding paint is a better option than tossing it in the trash, it is not doing any good sitting in your house either and can be reused and recycled. Discarded paint can contaminate soil and groundwater, but there are now many proper paint disposal options, along with ways to reuse paint’s recyclable containers.

Paint recycling requirements at the City of Roswell Recycling Center:

•    Roswell residents (proof required) may bring a maximum of two (2) 5-gallon container or 10 containers up to 1 gallon per residency, per day, of liquid latex and/or oil-based paint (not dried out or mixed with cat litter) in the original containers with the original readable label on it.

•    No leaking cans will be accepted.

•    *A fee of $3.15 per container will be charged for containers up to 1 gallon and $15 per 5-gallon container. On July 1, 2023 the fee will increase to $3.31 per container.

What to do with paints that are not accepted:

•    To properly dispose of oil-based or latex paints that do not qualify for recycling, add kitty litter or saw dust to them, wait until completely solidified before placing the cans—lid off—on the garbage container, not inside. Only empty paint cans or solidified paint can be thrown away.
