With the conclusion of the women's basketball game, the men's team took the floor for their 7:00 PM tip-off against Berea's counterpart. Entering the contest at a record of 4-10 on the season, and 0-1 in conference games following the opener against Maryville, the Scots hoped to even out their conference record.
The Scots' offense was led again by senior forward Promise Igbanu, as he tallied 27 points on the night along with three rebounds and an assist. Senior forward Logan Pearlman and freshman guard Luke Crowden both reached double digits in points, securing 13 a-piece.
Due to impressive offensive performances, such as those previously mentioned, the Scots finished the first half with a six-point lead. The 36-30 lead for the Scots was secured by a deep three-point shot knocked down by freshman guard Malcolm Noel as time expired.
The second half did not play out in favor of the Scots, however, as they relinquished the lead with less than six minutes remaining in regulation. Due in large part to their 10 second half turnovers, Covenant could not manage to regain the momentum and fell to the Mountaineers by a score of 74-71.
This loss leaves the Scots at an overall record of 4-11 and an 0-2 record in conference games for the season. Covenant still holds plenty of opportunities to flip the season around and finish strong in their final ten conference matchups.
Following the game, we had the opportunity to quickly talk to junior guard Michael St. Germain and junior forward Eli Witt about their experiences at Max Out Barnes and their upcoming stretch of conference games.
Michael St. Germain
Q: With this game being the third Max Out Barnes of your career, what effect does such a large attendance and level of energy have on the team from tip-off to final buzzer?
A: The large crowds are always awesome to play in front of. Even during warmups, the energy in the gym is unreal. While on the court having the large crowd chanting and chirping during the games adds another level of fun and excitement to the game. The energy of the crowd was constant the whole game, and we fed off it very easily. Hearing the extremely loud and constant cheers with every good play makes the game so much fun.
Eli Witt
Q: With ten games remaining in this regular season, all of which are conference contests, what is the narrative and feeling being shared within the team going forward?
A: The narrative for us is to continue to learn, grow and continue to get better each and every game, regardless of the outcome. Coach Brown and Coach Coffee have really encouraged each of us to stay focused on the things we can control in the game and know/do our job on and off the court. Obviously, the season hasn't started the way we would've liked for it to, but there's no time to pout and get down about the last few games. Our guys are hungry to grow and get better every day and we all know we're better than our record has shown. We are all continuing to work and prepare each and every day for the long season, and we have a lot of games left. Our team is hungry for success and growing closer together through these tough games instead of falling apart.
