Mikel Muffley, the CEO of a high-end Atlanta home building company, has been arrested after several of his clients accused him of defrauding them and stealing money, Fox 5 reported.
Though his attorneys have argued the case belongs in civil court and not a criminal venue, Muffley is accused of conversion of payments for real property improvements. He has since been released on his own recognizance as the claims against him continue to mount.
Muffley owns Muffley Homes, which bills itself as “master luxury builders” that do it all, including buying the lot, supplying the architect, facilitating the financing and hiring a contractor to complete the home building process from start to finish.
During a criminal warrant hearing, Muffley told a Fulton County judge part of his reason for starting such an operation was to create a more transparent system, Fox 5 reported on Dec. 16.
"Because we had so many issues with past builders, this was to create a more transparent system," Muffley told the judge. Muffley's attorneys placed blame for any mix-ups on his bookkeeper, who testified against him during the proceedings.
Though attorneys for Muffley argued the case belongs in civil court and not a criminal venue, the judge in the case disagreed, Fox 5 said.
