Glancy Rehabilitation Center reopens

A health care hub for nearly 80 years is about to launch again with a new focus.

The Northside Hospital Glancy Rehabilitation Center in Duluth returns on Thursday, Dec. 15, to serve the community in a new way.

“We’re happy to be able to bring our patients back over here … and we plan to make full use of our beautiful area,” said Debbie Bilbro, CEO of Northside Hospital Gwinnett and Northside Hospital Duluth.

Founded in the 1940s as the Joan Glancy Memorial Hospital, the facility originally was a small medical center in a four-room frame house in what was a small cotton town. The hospital had a focus on helping babies enter the world safely at a time of high infant mortality rates.

The hospital served both Black and white families, from all income levels, at a time when such wide access to care was not the standard. People from the surrounding community volunteered to help maintain the facility, the grounds and even vegetable gardens.

Glancy Memorial grew with Gwinnett County. By the 1980s, the hospital became part of the Gwinnett Medical System, and a new hospital was built in 2006.

Gwinnett Medical Center — including its Duluth facilities — joined the Northside Hospital family in 2019.

A transformation of the Northside Hospital Glancy Rehabilitation Center means new services for the people of Gwinnett County and beyond. The center offers a wide range of inpatient rehabilitation services including advanced equipment, rehabilitation technologies and innovative programs.

“Once again, Northside Hospital demonstrates our commitment to Gwinnett County and beyond,” Northside Gwinnett Chief Operating Officer Jay Dennard said, “from valuing the legacy of Joan Glancy Memorial Hospital to transforming a facility for state-of-the-art care for those we are privileged to serve.”

Being an affiliate of Northside Hospital means patients also have access to a broad network of physicians and ancillary services for specialty care.

“This place is such an icon for our community,” Mayor Nancy Harris said, recalling Easter egg hunts and hula hoop contests on the lawn of the hospital during her childhood in Duluth.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you Northside for investing into the community and preserving this historic place.”

The Northside Hospital Glancy Rehabilitation Center is located at 3215 McClure Bridge Road in Duluth. Members of the community are invited to take the opportunity to again “Discover Glancy.”
