Charlotte Landy will serve eight years, including one year in prison and three under house arrest after being found guilty of eight counts of reckless conduct when her dogs attacked and mauled two boys, the Fulton County Office of the Solicitor General announced last week.
In a recent report by FOX 5 Atlanta, Solicitor Keith E. Gammage said while it is rare that such a serious penalty is sought, it was appropriate in this case and carries the message that individuals are responsible for the proper care in housing their animals.
"My heart goes out to the parents of our young victims and our heroic neighbors who wasted no time in springing into action when they heard the cries from the boys. Thank God everyone survived and they are now healing," Gammage said in a statement, FOX 5 reports.
According to the report, the charges stem from an incident on May 11, 2011, when a pair of brothers, both under the age of 10, were attacked near Charlotte Landy’s home by her two rottweilers as they were riding their bikes and had to be rescued by neighbors.
Authorities say each of the brothers suffered injuries at the hands of the 100-pound dogs that required them to receive over 200 stitches, the report states. Neighbors later told investigators that the dogs had escaped at least four times before from Landy’s unsecured fence and once attacked a construction worker at her home.
After a three-day trial, jurors returned a unanimous verdict convicting Landy of the eight charges, with the mother of one of the boys asserting "this sentence sends a message that people have to be more responsible as dog owners when you own a dog that can cause serious injury to a human being."
