Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has signed an executive order suspending Miller County Sheriff Richard Morgan after he was charged with sexual battery and violating his oath of office.
The order calls for the chief judge of the Pataula Judicial Circuit in rural southwest Georgia to appoint an interim sheriff to serve in Morgan’s absence, a recent report by FOX 5 Atlanta said.
Acting on the recommendation of state Attorney General Chris Carr and two other Georgia sheriffs who reviewed the case, Kemp imposed a 60-day suspension on Morgan.
Morgan was arrested on Aug. 10 by Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents who had been asked to look into sexual misconduct allegations involving the sheriff, with the charges stemming from "an incident that took place while on a 911 call," the FOX 5 report said.
Morgan ran against incumbent Sheriff Scott Worsley in 2020 and lost. He was awarded with the job, however, when Worsley died from cancer the week before Election Day.
