Sandra Deal, Georgia’s former first lady, has passed away Aug. 23 at 80 after a long battle with breast cancer.
Deal passed away at her home in Demorest with her husband, former Gov. Nathan Deal, among those at her side, according to a report by Fox 5 Atlanta.
"We have lost a wife, mother and grandmother who loved us unconditionally, as we did her," the Deal family said in a statement. “She blessed us, taught us, and enriched our lives. Our family knew this day was coming, and we are grateful that it gave us the opportunity to enjoy as much time with her as we could in her final months.”
Deal was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 and had a tumor removed, according to Fox 5 Atlanta. Not long after that, she began chemotherapy for several months, but family members said the cancer eventually metastasized into brain cancer.
Deal was born in Georgia and grew up surrounded by educators. She attended Georgia College and State University where she received a bachelor's degree in elementary education and later a master’s degree, according to Fox 5.
According to the report, Deal was remembered in a public Celebration of Life ceremony Saturday at Lanier Technical College in Gainesville.
