Georgia Tech has hired Heisman Trophy winner and seven-year NFL veteran Chris Weinke as quarterbacks coach.

Weinke has a decade of coaching for high schools, colleges and NFL teams, Georgia Tech reported in a release. As quarterback for Florida State University, he led the team to a national championship in 1999 and won the Heisman in 2000.

"I'm excited to welcome Chris and his family to the Georgia Tech football family," Yellow Jackets head coach Geoff Collins said in the release. "In addition to being one of the great quarterbacks in college football history himself, Chris has coached and trained some of the game's top quarterbacks, and I can't wait for our talented quarterbacks to benefit from his knowledge and experience."

Most recently, he was running backs and quarterbacks coach at the University of Tennessee, Georgia Tech reported. He also worked as an offensive analyst at Alabama for head coach Nick Saban and coach Brian Daboll, who is now the Buffalo Bills' offensive coordinator.

In his playing days, Weinke is still considered one of the best college football players of all time after his stint at Florida State in 1997-2000, where he set several school records that still stand, Georgia Tech reported. He then went on to play for seven years in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers.

"I'm excited to be at Georgia Tech and grateful to Coach Collins for the opportunity," Weinke said in the release. "I already have a lot of familiarity with the staff, having previously worked with Chip (Long) and Brent (Key), having played with (defensive backs coach) Travares Tillman with the Panthers and having recruited (running backs coach) Mike Daniels’ players when he was a high school head coach. It’s an honor to join such a great group of coaches. I can’t wait to get started with all of them and the really talented players in the quarterback room."
