Former Georgia Tech baseball star Ryan Ritter died Oct. 7 at the age of 47.

In a release last month, Georgia Tech said Ritter played for the team from 1993-1995 as an outfielder and utility player, before being drafted in the eighth round of the MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers, where he played two seasons in the team's minor-league system.

"After being named a freshman all-American in 1993, he went on to earn second-team all-American and first-team all-ACC honors in 1995. He holds the single-season program record for sacrifice hits at 14 (1993)," the school wrote on its website.

Throughout his career with the Yellow Jackets, Ritter appeared in 167 games (155 starts), primarily playing in the outfield and second base, the release said. With 217 recorded hits, 138 RBIs, 73 extra-base hits and 34 home runs, Ritter ended his college days with a.342 career batting average.

According to the release, Ritter played as a part of the university’s first College World Series team in 1994, helping lead the team to a second-place ranking in the national championship playoff system.

In 1993, Ritter was named a freshman all-American and eventually went on to earn honors as second-team all-American and first-team all-ACC in 1995, the release said. To date, his record of 14 sacrifice hits earned in 1993 still holds the single-season program record in that category.
