Georgia Tech running backs coach Tashard Choice is one of 59 nominees for the 2021 Broyles Award, an honor for college football's top assistant coach, named after Tech alumnus and longtime Arkansas head coach and athletics director Frank Broyles.

A GTU alumnus who also serves as the Yellow Jackets’ offensive recruiting coordinator, Choice is in his third season with the program as the Tech’s running backs coach.

"Under Choice’s tutelage, the Jackets’ top three running backs – Jahmyr Gibbs, Jordan Mason and Dontae Smith – have combined for a whopping 2,424 all-purpose yards and 13 touchdowns in 10 games this season," the school said on its website.

Gibbs is an all-America candidate who ranks No. 2 nationally with 1,680 all-purpose yards. Prior to returning to Georgia Tech in 2019, Choice spent two seasons at the University of North Texas, first as an offensive quality control assistant (2017), then as running backs coach (2018).

Choice also is active in recruiting for Georgia Tech and was a significant contributor to the team's second-ever top 25 recruiting class in 2020, which included Gibbs, according to a report from ramblinwreck.com. Choice additionally coached star running back Ezekiel Elliot while working for the Dallas Cowboys.

Choice played football himself for Georgia Tech from 2005 to 2007 and still ranks fourth in school history in rushing yards and third in touchdowns. He subsequently played in the NFL for six years with the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins and Indianapolis Colts.

A 43-member selection committee will decide the winner of the Broyles award this year, after choosing 15 semi finalists and 5 finalists. The Broyles award was started in 1996, according to a report from ramblinwreck.com.
