City of Roswell issued the following announcement on September 21.
The City of Roswell is getting ready to open the doors of Mimosa Hall and Gardens, a historic nine-acre estate built in 1841 and purchased by the City in 2017. Members of the public are invited to join City staff and community leaders for an open house and celebration on Wednesday, Sept. 29, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at 127 Bulloch Avenue in Roswell.
Mimosa Hall and Gardens will serve as a rental venue and a public meeting space for special events and programming. At the Sept. 29 event, attendees will have an opportunity to tour Mimosa Hall’s first floor and will see how it can be staged for a special events. In addition, the event will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a self-tour of the grounds. Light refreshments will be served. RSVPs to dbush@roswellgov.com are appreciated.
Since the property was purchased four years ago, the City of Roswell’s Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department has been progressively working toward a series of milestones to survey, assess, repair, and improve the home and grounds. These milestones have included an historic building and grounds assessment, ground-penetrating radar and tree surveys, a facility condition assessment, a historic structures report, an archeological study, and many repair and replacement projects, including the installation of an integrated solar roof/energy system in partnership with the Friends of Mimosa Hall and Gardens. Facility improvements have culminated in the home’s most recent milestone: receiving the Certificate of Occupancy (CO) that makes it possible to start renting the facility.
“After much hard work and dedication, we are excited to be able to invite members of the public into Mimosa Hall and to show our community what an exceptional and unique space it will be for special events and other gatherings,” said Jeff Leatherman, Director of the City of Roswell’s Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department.
Although much has been accomplished to prepare Mimosa Hall for its next evolution as a specialty venue, Leatherman wants visitors to understand that there is still more work to be done.
“This is one major step in a long process,” said Leatherman. “There are some unique challenges that come with the repair and maintenance of a 180-year-old home. We’ve come a long way, but we’re still working on the continued improvement of the house and grounds, and we appreciate our community’s ongoing support as we restore this historic property to its former beauty.”
Starting Oct. 1, members of the public interested in renting in Mimosa Hall’s first floor or grounds will be able to view the site by appointment by contacting Susie McCoy, Special Events Facilities Coordinator, at 770-594-6154 or smccoy@roswellgov.com. Also starting on Oct. 1, the grounds of the estate will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Unlike the other historic homes owned and operated by the City—Barrington Hall, Bulloch Hall, and Archibald Smith Plantation—Mimosa Hall will not be operated as a museum and will not maintain regular hours. However, due to the community’s interest in the house, Mimosa Hall will be open to the public for two special Saturday open house events, Oct. 16 and Nov. 20, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Private group tours will not be offered.
