Hopewell Middle School counted 177 African American students for the 2024-25 school year, reflecting a 13.5% increase over the prior year, Georgia Department of Education reports indicate. For additional information, see the Georgia Department of Education.

The school’s total enrollment hit 1,271 students, with African American students comprising 14% of the student body, making them the second-smallest student group at the school.

Located within Fulton County School District, Hopewell Middle School’s central offices are based in Atlanta.

Westlake High School enrolled the highest number of African American students among Fulton County’s 103 schools in the 2024-25 school year, with a total of 1,907 students.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, public schools in Georgia were approximately 36.4% Black, 35.9% white, 18.1% Hispanic, 4% Asian, 4.6% multiracial, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.1% Pacific Islander by student population.

Post-pandemic, 20.7% of Georgia students missed 10% or more school days in 2024, with the issue of chronic absenteeism persisting, per the Georgia Department of Education. GaDOE launched a statewide initiative that includes a real-time dashboard, public awareness campaigns, and increased support for districts with greater attendance challenges.

In 2025, state lawmakers passed new legislation amending attendance laws to prohibit expulsion solely for absenteeism and to mandate new reporting standards. The measure also supports alternate diploma pathways; details on the bill can be found here.

Georgia schools reported an average student-to-teacher ratio of about 14:1 in 2026, surpassing the national average of 15:1, according to Public School Review.
