Aaron Baker, Democratic candidate for Georgia State House District 51, said in a March 18 Instagram video, “I am an openly trans Jewish lesbian running for Georgia State House.” Baker made the statement to outline her campaign priorities on housing affordability and state legislature issues.
Baker’s candidacy comes as Georgia approaches its May 19, 2026, primaries. Both Baker and Robin McCoy, a Democratic candidate for Senate District 5, are seeking to become the first transgender elected officials in the state legislature, campaigning for seats in the General Assembly. In February, the two met with voters at Lavender Bookshop in Marietta for a community discussion on affordable housing, public transportation, transgender issues, and immigration, according to Rough Draft Atlanta.
Baker and McCoy campaigned together at a Q&A event at Lavender Bookshop. They are running on similar priorities including affordable housing, public transportation, and LGBTQ+ rights. Early voting begins April 27 ahead of the May 19 primary, MSN reported.
Lavender Bookshop opened in October 2024 and focuses on queer literature. The shop stocks only books with a queer main character and serves as a community space for LGBTQ-focused events and political engagement. Rough Draft Atlanta described it as a fitting venue for candidates like Baker and McCoy.
Robin McCoy is running as a Democrat for the Georgia State Senate in District 5. The district covers areas around metro Atlanta that overlap with Baker’s House District 51. On her campaign website, McCoy lists LGBTQ+ rights and “Trump-proofing the district” among her top priorities. She is endorsed by Advocates for Trans Equality.
According to her campaign website, Aaron Baker is a trans woman and parent who has lived in Sandy Springs for more than twenty years. She works as a software architect and has developed tools to make Georgia politics more accessible—including platforms for reading legislation in plain English and tracking campaign finance data. Her campaign is guided by Jewish values of justice, compassion, and fairness.
